5GREAT TV - NO COMPLAINTS SO FAR
By David L. Welch
i purchased this 42" vizio tv a couple of weeks ago and so far i am very happy. it has great color i love the internet apps, the high def looks great and even the 3d is stunning. after much research, i found the amazon price very reasonable compared to other vendors, especially considering the fact that i did not have to pay any sales tax and shipping and handling were free. setup was basically easy (i am not real technically inclined) and we had the tv up and running within 20 or so minutes.i have a few minor complaints but still feel this tv warrants five stars. they are:1. the sound is not the richest, but most flat screens will have sound which is inferior to a home theater system. thus, i purchased a sony home theatre for my visio and am very happy. cost of the home theater from amazon; $257.2. the tv takes a little while to come on. i don't know if that is particular to this brand/model since this is the first flat screen i have owned.3. if you have little children, the tv base that comes with it is not real stable and the tv could possibly be tipped easily. of course if you are hanging it on a wall, this is not an issue. be sure to have your tv on a solid level stand so it will not tend to tip.other than that i am very pleased with the quality and price of my new tv. now i just hope i don't become a couch potato and gain 50 pounds with my new little toy.oh yes, one idea i've tried which i really like. i've been storing tons of digital photos on a couple of computers for years. they were really not organized much and i seldom viewed them. since the vizio will play photos or music from its usb ports, i purchased a 16 mb thumb drive and put literally thousands of photos on it, arranged in various folders. i plugged my thumb drive into the usb port on the side of my vizio, and now i can watch a slide show right in my living room any time i want.the only thing i was disappointed in is vizio will not play videos on removeable drives. but i purchased a western digital media player (a little black box with a remote; model # WDAVNOOBN) to plug into vizio's hdmi port. that will allow me to play my home videos from an external drive hooked to the media box. the western digital player only cost $39, well worth it.hope this review helped.dave

5Great buy Great TV
By seveles
I spent months looking for a TV and finally found this one. After comparing different models i decided on this one for the price. The LED LCD screen at 42" is big enough for all your needs, home theater, casual watching, video games. its excellent, the TV is light and thin due to it being a flat screen and all :P. easy to use menu and set up. the only downside is you cannot turn off the WiFi on it. which tbh isnt really a down side. ive owned it for 2 months now and love it, so my suggestion if you are looking for a TV this is the one

5Excellent For The Price
By ethanmc12
This is my first HDTV after looking and researching for months. There is not much bad I can say about it. Picture is excellent, price is great, and apps are a great addition to the already amazing package. Vizio has upped their game recently and this shows it. I highly recommend it.

4Good but could be better.
By B. Brewer
Speaker Connections: This unit uses propitiatory plug-ins to the head unit, how ever the speakers them selves use the normal push-tab-insert-wire connection. While I understand why they uses funny custom connections, I suppose you could cut the cord and save the custom plug. I would not consider this a deal breaker.DLNA: Works as it should, but I really wish it would simply support a network shared folder. But you have to have a DLNA server on your home computer (or compliant device), what a bummer, that just one extra process I need to have running on my server. I have had some audio codec issues Dolby DTS is sometimes trans-coded to base stereo (2.0) or just regular Dolby Surround 5.1. It plays .MKVs good at 1080 and file sizes > 9GB. (I use serviio as my DNLA server on my PC's)Apps: There are a load of useless apps, and only have a handful of useful apps. Pandora oddly does not have a thumbs up or thumbs down option. I do wish it had Revision 3, but sadly it doesn't.Remote: The included remote is slow, but the Android app is pretty good, however the qwerty seems flaky and does not work with Netflix, so searching Netflix is a pain!Sound: Is robust for these little speakers and appears clean at full volume. However given that this is a 1000w system - it is not that loud at full volume, and the sub-woofer is not 'heart thumping' - I would say the sub-woofer is mostly there to make up for the lack of bass the left and right channels can't produce, and doesn't add too much 'rumble'. Despite the manual saying that it delivers 250w is VERY questionable. I have owned lesser woofers (100w) that delivered much better performance.Setup: Easy - because of the custom connectors.Wireless Rear channels: Work as intended, only gripe is; I wished Sony would have put a 'flat plug-in' so the plug doesn't 'poke' my couch as it sits against the wall - I will need to buy an extension that has a flat plug-in or I fear that in the long term one of two thing will happen, I will damage my couch, or the cord will fray and short out.Speakers: Are small enough and will look okay in any set up. They are wall mountable, simply by removing a screw and re-positioning the speaker base.Head unit: Are touch sensitive controls, and the display is lack luster, it sits at the rear of the unit - so if you rely on reading the display - do not tuck the head unit into a shelf - put it on top and fully exposed. The head unit does not get hot when music is played a full volume for an extended period. The fan noise is audible, but not too bad.Blu-Ray: Not tested (.MKVs)WiFi: Not Tested (Ethernet)These are my initial impressions after one week of owning the system. I may revise this review later with final impressions.-------------------------<<< After 3 Months use >>>ACQUIRING INTERNET CONTENT: Using some of the apps the unit will display on the TV - 'Acquiring internet information' or something similar too often, this is a hassle and an extra step - Sony should just automatically complete the acquiring process - but, it will just sit there until you press 'continue' - LAME!NETFLIX CRASHES: Netflix will often crash and will result in you needing to restart the app, or sometimes it will require a power cycle (unit off then on).BLANK SCREEN: When you are on a different 'function' (input) and you have turned off the unit and then later turn it back on to only see a black screen - is a little confusing if the input device is also off. I have powered the Sony on and off a few times before I remembered that it was on HDMI 1 and the Xbox 360 was off - so all I was getting was a black screen and thought the system had crashed or had become unresponsive although it hadn't. A simple solution press the HOME or NETFLX button on the remote.SLOW SOFTWARE: Sometimes the system will hang or become confused/slow if too many buttons on the remote have been pressed - sometimes it will need to be power cycled to get the unit responsive again. pressing too many buttons on the remote too quickly stems from the slow performance of the unit. You press a button and nothing happens, only to think 'oh - it must not have 'seen' the remote, and you try again, and then one mote time - to find that the unit has either froze or has become really slow. A power cycle will fix this (wait until the pulsing light turns all of the way off - if you don't you will still have a slow or a frozen unit). Just be patient and wait about 5 seconds between button pushes and look for the pulse of light on the head unit to confirm that the unit did 'see' the remote - and if it did see it and still did not do anything - it's time for a power cycle.SOFTWARE UPDATES: Are just like the PS3 they take FOREVER! And seem to fix or add nothing. It seems to happen about once every month. So I suppose (for now anyway) Sony seems proactive at updating the unit - but as for what it does or fixes, who knows (probably add to the problems - or extra stupid DRMs)CONCLUSION: I'm tempted to revise my star rating to a 3/5, because once the 'new' wears off - it really is only average. Should Sony fix the software/speed/responsiveness then it would be worthy of keeping 4 stars. But for now I will leave it at 4 stars. (3.5 would be a better estimate)

4Clean sound, video settings good after tweaking, needs more customizability
By Matthew T. Weflen
Our family has moved into a new condo, and we wanted to upgrade our sound system to include wireless rear speakers, both for aesthetic and childproofing reasons. So this system sat atop the list of HTIBs to get. I've had it up and running for a week or so, and the following are my thoughts.Set-up:This was a breeze to set up. The speaker wires have color coded plugs, the rear speaker unit has a wireless dongle which is easy to insert (though why it isn't built in is beyond me) and the onscreen menus for setting up internet functions are user friendly. I can't imagine anyone but the most technophobic having any issues.Audio: The audio is clean and crisp, and the bass response from the included unpowered subwooferis good. You may not be used to such clean sound, and think it somewhat anemic. My previous (also unpowered) sub had kicked in on everything, which certainly made everything bassy, but I now realize it had muddied things up considerably. Rest assured, on media files that require deep bass (for instance, Lor of the Rings) it is there in spades. The included surround speakers are also clear and clean sounding. Overall, it's a very good surround experience. There is no room to expand into 7.1 chanel territory from 5.1, but really I don't think most users will care a whole lot.Video: When I first put in a Blu-Ray, i thought to myself, "why is this so mushy and soft?" Well, it became clear that Sony has chosen to enable default settings that smooth and otherwise tinker with the video output. These sorts of cheats are unnecessary with a source like Blu-Ray. So, word to the wise, if you want your Blu-Rays to look as crisp and subtly detailed as they did on your other players, go into "Options" while playing a video and set it to "Direct" (which is also left completely unexplained in all materials, but apparently defeats all extra processing). Also head into the XMB main menu and disable other smoothing regimens. After some tweaks, the video is just about as good as any other standalone player. There is still some sort of processing I can't find a setting to defeat, which causes very slightly odd patterns in film grain. I did comparisons watching the same Blu-Ray of Star Trek TNG, on the same TV with he same settings, flipping between inputs. The grain looks different here than on my Panasonic DMP-BD65, and it is detrimental. Would I have noticed it without a direct comparison? Maybe not. Will the average viewer even care? Probably not. But it needs to be said that this may not be the ultimate videophile player. It is adequate, even good. But it's not absolutely top tier, and will probably be bettered by high quality standalones. Unfortunately, unlike the PS3 and Panasonic Blu-Ray players, there is no 1.5x speed video with stereo audio. This was a great time saver for watching TV shows on DVD, and will be missed.Ease of Use: There are only two HDMI inputs, which means that you will have to be frugal with external sources, unless your TV allows for ARC (audio return channel) with its HDMI inputs. Boot up takes maybe 15 seconds, not too bad, but slower than you may be used to on an old style AV receiver. The remote control is adequate, but it lacks direct input buttons, instead forcing you to either go through the onscreen menu or to keep pressing "Function" (not "Input" for some bizarre reason) until you finally get to what you want. The main unit has only a small LCD display, and it is on the top of the unit instead of the front, so it may not be visible in many installations. The most irritating thing in my book is the inability to rename inputs within the menu. I can do it on my TV, why can't I do it on someting that presumably has much more CPU horsepower? Instead, I am stuck trying to remember what HDMI 1 and 2 are whenever I switch. The IPTV content interfaces are hit or miss. Netflix is updated to the newest specs, containing 5.1ch sound and subtitle options. Hulu Plus, however, is not, and you can't display subtitles even though they are present on other devices. On the other hand, you do get a free 3 month trial of the service, which is nice. The radio tuner only does FM. This is really annoying, since I listen to AM sports broadcasts of my local White Sox. I cannot even fathom why AM tuning was left out when receivers from 5, 10, or more years ago can do it easily. So overall, the system functions well, but has a few irritating caveats. Pretty much like anything Sony creates. If you are a Sony veteran, you'll know exactly the kinds of quirks to expect. You should go in knowing that they haven't created the ultimate ease-of-use product this time around. But it still performs quit well in terms of nuts and bolts A/V performance. I think the audio might be a tad better than the video, for what it's worth.

1Went Sideways
By Zebulon
Bought this unit May of 2012. It doesn't get a lot of use. I average maybe two movies a week on it. I put a movie in yesterday and it started acting like the video and audio was in slow motion except it was choppy. Tried a couple more DVDs, same thing. Checked for firmware update and it was up to date. I did an online return and sent it out today. I had to send it from Seattle to Texas which cost me $30.00.I have always been a Sony fan except laptops. This unit is matched up to a Sony big screen that was bought at the same time. The unit did work very good prior to this issue and was good for what it is.I will update this as I go through the warranty process.Got an email from Sony saying they received the unit about five days after sending it. Five days after that 11/15/12 I got an email from tech group saying that nothing is wrong with it. I sent the following response (the first part being what I put on the Sony website for return);"I was watching a DVD (non Blue Ray) and after a few minutes the video and audio became very choppy and like slow motion. I put in a different DVD to make sure it wasn't the DVD. It did the same thing with the second DVD. I then put in a Blue Ray DVD to see if it would do it with it and it did. I checked to see if there was firmware update for it via wifi and there was none. Trust me, I would not pay $30.00 for shipping and go with out my home theater for weeks."On 11/20/12, I got an email that my unit was being shipped to me. I received the unit about a week later. It was not the one I sent. I checked the serial number. The unit sent to me looked like it had been used for a wheel chock. It had deep scratches in it and was covered in "cheese". I guess some people don't wash their hands. One thing I forgot to tell Sony when I sent it in was that I use the optical audio to connect to my cable box. The audio would drop out occasionally and slowly work it's way back to normal levels. The unit Sony sent me back does not do that. I guess this is a positive. One last word on the website repair page. Your status is never updated. When you go to check the status, it has the same comment each time.I would bump this up to a three star rating. I would give it more but now I am a little gun shy, waiting for ir to go bad again. Obviously someone else had sent this unit it.

5Fantastic device, but 1st-production articles may prove frustrating to some...
By Cary L. Brown
I received my player a short time ago, and so far I'm very pleased with the device. Setup wasn't totally painless, however.I currently own four optical-disk-playing devices (not counting computer drives). I have a five-disk Sony DVD carousel, a Samsung BD player(with wireless but with minimal features, mainly Pandora, Netflix, Blockbuster, and some news headlines), a slightly older Sony BD player(BDP-570) which has, up until now, been the main unit in my entertainment center, and now this.I'm reasonably pleased that the user interface is essentially unaltered from my earlier Sony BD device. The interface is still very easy to use, and very intuitive. It DOES, however, have the annoyance of lacking some configurability (I'd sure like to be able to remove the "Michael Jackson channel" from my list of video channels, for example, as I'll never... EVER... watch that.)It does have a few new features accessed from that media-resources screen... the Opera web browser, a pretty decent Skype client, and a few other items. But if you've owned a Sony BD device before, the UI will be totally familiar to you, as will most of the main configuration options. The remote control is also very similar to the older Sony remote, except that some of the special functions are now in a secondary, concentric ring around the nav-select pad... which is actually a BAD thing as far as I'm concerned, as I have found myself frequently accidentally hitting the outside ring when I'm trying to hit the inside ring, or vice-versa. Fortunately for me, I seldom use the provided remote, instead using my Logitech Harmony programmable remote... so this is not really an issue. But if you plan to use this remote as your primary control, I suspect you'll experience the same thing from time to time. Sony could have done better in this regard.Picture quality is gorgeous, of course, as played on my 240hz Samsung 3D LEDTV. I wasn't sure that there would be any visible difference, but the image quality is notable improved, especially on upscaled DVD images. It seems that the two fast processor cores in the machine are getting a pretty robust workout... they're not being wasted! 3D is impressive, too... though I suspect this is more related to the TV than the player. (Samsung's 3D TVs are the best on the market IMHO, right now, though Sony's BD players are the best, I think!) That said, the machine never so much as "hesitates a frame" in even the most action-packed 3D scenes... which is something you'll occasionally note on lower-end 3D units, as the data streaming through them can briefly get backed up in fast, moving scenes, being rendered twice-over for each frame (once per eye, in other words).I do not have access to a 4K display, so I have no idea if that's good or not. I suspect that 4K will tax the resources of this machine... then again, so few people have 4K displays right now, it's not worth quibbling about.Now... if you buy one of the first units (ie, the current batch, I think!), you'll likely have a few issues when you first obtain it. The machine is designed to be network-connected, and wants to be connected. But, at least in my case, and in the case of many others, the network functionality seems somewhat hobbled under the "release firmware." You need to update the machine's firmware... after which, my machine has worked perfectly. But the device, by default, will try to "web update" itself anytime connected. Which means that you need to manually update the device, using either downloaded media (from the vendor's website), media obtained from the vendor (for a fee), or at the very least, a hard-wired network connection, in order to do your first update.Prior to the first update, I had significant difficulties maintaining a connection... which could lead to an improper update, and a "bricked" device. Lots of other folks had the same problem. Post-update, my device works perfectly. Also pre-update, I couldn't manually enter my wireless networking info (the UI was there, but it didn't allow me to finish my setup). Post-update, that's no longer an issue. The receiver in this device isn't tremendously powerful, and a better antenna/receiver set would be a major boon. It's basically on-par with devices built into laptops and so forth, and (post-update) works about the same as any of those. But it would be well-served by having some improved reception, since it's going to be tasked with streaming a lot of data. The reception is better than you'll get with a Roku or the like, but not as good as it ought to be for the price, and if you're not near your router, you may have some connectivity issues from time to time. It does seem to be on-par with my prior Sony device, or the built-in wireless in any of my TVs.That's about all I can say about it right now. It's a terrific device, plays back flawlessly for any media I have access to, and just generally is the best device of its type out there right now, as far as I'm concerned. Just be careful about updating the device when you first receive it. I recommend downloading the update files and installing them without the network at all (see Sony's support site). After doing this, my network has worked flawlessly so far, and the device is separated from my router by a floor and four walls, and about fifty feet... and we have power lines nearby.I'm very satisfied with the device so far. If that ever changes, I'll be sure to update this review, though.*************Edit: Well, I've had this for a while now and have fully put it through its paces. There's one thing I thought I ought to mention. This has the best DLNA interface I've yet to see on a consumer device. It's easy to use, functions well... but there's a problem. It only recognizes a tiny subset of my media, including very, very few of my video files... very few. And while it will recognize any MP3 file, most of my media is in WMA format, which the player won't recognize, either. So, the DLNA functionality is pretty hobbled, as far as I'm concerned. I'd love to hear the experiences of others in this regard. No support for windows media audio and video? No support for MKV containers? These are things that really should be present in ANY contemporary media-streaming solution. Hopefully Sony can implement something (it's not a hardware issue so it MUST be a legal-rights issue!) to manage file types better in the future.Right now, the only device I have which can make full use of my media server, with the exception of actual PCs, is my little Archos portable media player. I sure wish my Sony BD player had support for as many file times as my Archos does...*************Another edit:I've now had two more firmware updates since posting the above. And yesterday, I decided to play around with the network DLNA mode again. I don't know which firmware fixed this, but as of yesterday, I can now play WMA audio files with no problems.I still can't see any of my WMV, DIVX, MOV, or other video files. The only things I CAN see, really, are the transport stream files taken directly from DVD rips, and I only have a handful of those, created off of disks I own, so that I could put those files onto my portable player (Archos 5IT, 500GB).So... it does seem that Sony is "fixing" the DLNA issues, but a step at a time. I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of my stuff... video files, etc... someday soon.

3Excellent Picture-Sound, but flakey firmware performance
By Scott Kessler
Ok. I rated this item 3 stars which is comprised of 5 stars for picture/audio performance (and other things, more in a bit) but 1 star for extremely flakey and down-right dangerous firmware (more on that in a bit). For for what gets 5 or 4-5 star ratings: The 'good'The image and picture quality of this Sony is the best to-date and rivals the best of blu-ray players at nearly any price. The available adjustments make for great enhancements and tweaks for any kind of display (plasma, lcd, led, projector (dlp or lcd or ...). The streaming options are fantastic with Amazon Video, Netflix, YouTube, and a host of other streaming services (including music/radio streaming services). The Sony Entertainment Network is also available and that adds a host of additional options for viewing/listening (however, I'm not a fan so I've not explored it too much). Netflix on this unit (at least after performing latest firmware upgrade ... more on that in the 'ugly' section of this review) give you truer HD performance with 1080p streaming and DD+ 5.1 surround capabilities. Watching Killer Elite on video was actually fantastic. For what gets a 1 or 2 star rating: The 'bad'I've updated to the latest firmware and when I put in a disc and then turn on my whole entertainment setup, the blu-ray players either turns off (which is ok) or worse freezes at the menu for some reason. When it appears to not freeze and simply hit play to start the blu-ray disc, the machine freezes and will not shut off and the soft-buttons keep flashing ... I have to unplug it to reset the unit. I may have a bad unit and I will probably replace it, but this should never happen. I've had so many dvd and blu-ray players and this is the worst behaving one I've ever had. I've had the unit less than 24 hours and had to unplug it 3 times .... ouch. As bad as this is, the worst is yet to come. The 'ugly'When attempting to setup the networking setting out of the box ... the unit would not connect when everthing else in my house was connecting fine. The wired connection would not work. So I tried wireless ... this is where the extreme ugly comes in to play. I used the automatic WPS networking setting where you go and push a button on your router and it auto-negotiates with the device and setup the blu-ray player's network settings. Well, instead of setting the player, the player when working with my router UNBELIEVABLY changed my routers SSID to gibberish and also change my passphrase to gibberish ... and then nothing in my house, including the Sony blu-ray player would connect to my home network ... UGGH.... so not being a techno-phobe noobie, I logged into my router withl admin rights and changed my SSID and settings back, but my router decided that I could not apparently just change it all back and all would be good ... Nooo ... I had to re-choose and rekey in the passphrase on every wireless device in our house .... which we have a ton, a few in nearly every room .... arghhh.... way to go Sony. Not only is this bad, it is ugly and down right dangerours ....Now I decided with such craziness going on that I had to update the firmware and perhaps that would take care of the wireless issue ... but because I could not get it to connect to my network nor trusted the darn thing to not screw up my network, I downloaded the firmware (396 or something...) and burned the files to CDR and then updated the players, which went ok. However, the player after ejecting the disc and my turning it back on, it strangely rebooted itself at least 20 times which made me think that I had a complete lemon on my hands. Eventually it stopped after about 15 minutes and now work fine except for the behavior in the 'bad' part of this review.I'd say to wait and see if Sony works out the firmware issues or quality issues or whatever the issue is with this player. I'm going to see about replacing the player as it is flakey. However, the audio/video and streaming options are outstanding.

5Firmware update fixed everything.
By W. ingle
I'm on my second one now. The first one arrived with the bd-rom drive broken. Before I discovered it, I worked on the wireless side of the player and successfully registered with Vudu, Hulu+, Amazon, Netflix. I sent the player back for exchange. The new one arrived and I must say, the picture quality playing blu ray discs is outstanding, better than my previous 2d player. However, I cannot register this machine with Netflix. The screen goes black and the machine locks up when I access Netflix. Called Netflix first: must be your player. Called Sony and was escalated to level 3 after numerous resettings and testings. Final result: your isp is too slow to access Netflix. This in spite of the fact that the previous 790 had no problems with Netflix. I am also streaming movies just fine on my laptop from Netflix. Today, my isp was running at 3mbps, so I tried again: locked up. No problems registering Vudu, Hulu+, Amazon. Another example of finger pointing. They make a fine art of blaming every piece of equipment you have except theirs. I'll keep the player, because it's otherwise ok, and I can stream Netflix on my laptop, but I'm not happy with Sony's tech support (and they are aware of it.)Update 3/1/13. I've had the player about 8 months now. Shortly after I wrote the above review, the player notified me of a firmware update, downloaded it and installed it. Everything has worked perfectly since then. The player is doing an outstanding job and I am completely happy with it. Therefore, I'm changing my rating to 5 stars.
